Scandinavian Writers, Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo ROSEANNA, 1st in a series (Martin Beck)

Looking back 50 years, this series of murder mysteries started with ROSEANNA introducing Martin Beck, First Detective Inspector in 10 books about police crime stories that are respectfully known as “The Story of Crime”.

Many people as I enjoy reading a whole series of books about a group of people who work together to solve the many crimes that plague the lives of everyday members of their societies. This collection presents in the first issue a description of the police department and those that are working together in it and also a wonderful description of part of the country of Sweden.  You will enjoy the differences in the “state of the world” and specifically Europe half a century ago. The characters are as they are, some getting along in life better than others……..but throughout the series, you’ll enjoy watching the changes in the main characters as the changes in their world changes them. Some survive, but some don’t.

THIS SET OF BOOKS WILL MAKE A GREAT GIFT FOR SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE IF YOU KNOW THAT THEY LOVE CRIME/MURDER NOVELS…..SUGGESTION:  Give them book number 1, Roseanna with the promise that if they like that one, you’ll get them #2, The Man Who Went Up In Smoke!

note: Thanks to Amazon, the rest of the books are available.

Road Trip, New York State/Living in the Moments #2, Added Procedure

I have had so many requests for more information about “Living In the Moments”!

I’m attaching a procedure that anybody can use to have a “Living in the Moments” experience!

IF you’d like to share your adventure……………send it to me: ralawson@knology.net

Living in the Moments Procedure:

Objective: To create a happy moment for ourselves and those around us.

  1. Start out your day believing that you are going to have a really good day.
  2. Pick a time frame: It can be during lunch or a break or after the “work day” or maybe even ALL DAY!
  3. Tell yourself (mind and body) that you will listen to what your body is telling you and what your mind/heart guides you to do.
  4. When the time comes that you’ve chosen be aware of what your body is telling you; are you comfortable where you are (too hot or too cold…………change locations, etc.) / does your body feel comfortable…..or should you sit or stand or run or walk………?

Whatever your body tells you, do it so that you are listening and doing what your body tells you is the right condition for your “happy moment”.

  1. What is your mind/heart telling you; should you talk to that person or help that lady with the unruly children or help that old lady cross the street, throw a dollar or two in the hat of the kid playing the guitar on the street. YOU WILL KNOW WHAT TO DO!

NOTE: Listen with your mind/heart. Open yourself to connecting with the people around you, connect with their energy. You have a 6 ft. diameter energy field surrounding you as do all things/people…………..FEEL IT AND USE IT!

Results: You will know if your time was successful in living in the moments. You’ll feel happy, fulfilled, energetic, satisfied………..AND you’ll want to do it again.

The more you use this exercise the better you’ll get at being successful. You will be happier and will make the people around you glad you “stepped into their lives!

SHARE THE LOVE!  Y1         8/15/17

Gunnar Staalesen..Scandinavian Authors Update

Once in a while you/we discover a “new” ….to us….author. I’ve posted recently about Gunnar Staalesen. He is a Scandinavian author ( Norway ) living in Bergen. I’ve found 5 of the 9 published books about the social worker/private detective character, Varg Veum. What makes this author different is his descriptions of the landscape, political, psychological and history of the country, Norway.

Staalesen’s books are to read through once to get the storyline ……………and then put them aside and reread them slowly to let the detailed descriptions of everything in and about the books sink in and enjoy! Definitely books to buy and keep.

He also wrote some detective stories before he started the Varg Veum series but I haven’t been able to find those yet. If anybody out there knows how to get copies of those books………I want to know: ralawson@knology.net

NOTE: “Varg” in Norwegian means “wolf”. The expression “varg i veum” means “persona non grata”, “outlaw” or “pariah”.  From the book cover….

Lost Somewhere In-between Life and Death

Where do you stand on such a life and death topic? You aren’t dead but you can’t get well and they won’t let you die!

A lady I know is now facing death by Alzheimer’s (and related conditions). She has no idea where she is or what is going on around her. Doesn’t know family members. She is falling at least twice a day……it is against the law to restrain a person in a wheelchair with a belt, etc. NOW they want to take her to a “special hospital” and try “new drugs” that they say may bring back her cognitive abilities. The nursing home can’t handle her so what are the options for the family!? She has signed a DNR (do not resuscitate) paper.

At what point can somebody say…………this is it! We have to respect her DNR! Who will stand up and say this is insane to force this woman to continue living like this?

One possible option is to place her in Hospice care in one of the special units that many hospitals have. Hospice is there to keep the patient comfortable and out of pain (many definitions of that word)!

I took one of the first courses on Hospice 30 years ago. Back then we weren’t allowed in the hospitals unless a doctor gave permission. Times have changed!!!! Now Medicare covers Hospice care most of the time……..maybe even all of the time………….BUT it used to be only for “dying” people……….now they can work with patients for at least up to 2 years under special circumstances. At least here they can manage a patient’s “pain”.

We need to change some laws to respect the wishes of the dying and their families!

You don’t realize the situation until you LIVE IT YOURSELF……………and then is too late.

BE aware! Be proactive! Assist the living! Honor the weary! And honor those too sick to help themselves! That is the very least we should be able to do!

John Grisham/Kristina Ohlsson USA/Scandinavian Book News/Reviews

GRISHAM does it again! And new author (to me) Kristina Ohlsson, initial blockbuster!

John Grisham…….THE WHISTLER, another great mystery by one of the best! This one is about a really bad judge and Native American Indians building a casino in Florida. It is another book that could/should be made into a great movie! There would be no need to have a big star cast………..there are so many interesting characters that even unknowns could carry the movie to the top! AND like the Hallmark Movie stories…………..the good guys win (well some of them) and the bad guys lose ( well most of them). Next out for Grisham is Camino Island…….wonder if it is the one in the land of many lakes………Minnesota?

Kristina Ohlsson….YEP, another Scandinavian author…………..UNWANTED!  In her debut book she reads like an old pro! One small mistake on a train changes everything in the lives of many people. This is another writer who engages the “WHY” instead of the actual crime details. I’ve ordered books two and three in the series!……………so get book one now!

Road Trip! Upper New York State/VA.

Trips away from our everyday routines are good for the soul! IF for nothing else, when you get back you feel like, “Ain’t no place like HOME”……..if you don’t get that feeling when you come back home, you need to make changes in where and how you are living! Just a thought!

After a week of “recovery from 8 hours on the road for several days” the calm feeling of home returned and a good friend asked me to share “the 2 most memorable moments or days of the trip”. Without thinking “out of the blue” I answered:   #1. The 4 hours in upper New York State that I sat on the front porch with a glass of iced tea with a dear friend of mine and shared our views and beliefs about Life’s Lessons. Though we have been “garden friends” for many years, we never realized that we share many of the same beliefs about religion and life. The daytime temperature was 75 degrees with partially sunny skies and a gentle breeze blowing in the friendly trees at the edge of the yard. All things/people are connected by the invisible strings of the Universe and when we take off our blinders and open our hearts we can communicate on a level of complete bliss. # 2. On the last day of the trip before leaving to come back home I spent a whole day of “just letting it happen” with no planning except just showing up with an open mind and a willing spirit. I’ve been practicing with paying attention to relating how I “feel” governing what I do and where I go. This is really an experiment with “living in the moments” and “letting our greater good lead us to the right locations and situations” in our lives. In a way it is another way of meditating. That day was one of the most satisfying and invigorating of my life. TRY IT!

If any body is interested in more details about #1 and #2 shoot me an e-mail and I’ll share more details.

Live in the moments………once they are gone………….they are gone forever.

Scandinavian Writers Update: Mari Jungstedt….A Darker Sky

Like I’ve said before, “Just as I think I’ve found the last great Scandinavian writer”…….another one or two or three pop up! Incredible! AND true!

After reading 10 of Mari Jungstedt’s books about Gotland………….I got a notice/Amazon that a new book by Mari Junstedt was available! Turns out that she has started a new series with another author, Ruben Eliassen!!!!!! And I had to try it out to see what the change was all about.

As it happens she has made a wonderful change in direction with this new series! It takes place in the Canary Islands………..a much different climate location  than Gotland! The book, A Darker Sky is a different style too (co author being a male) has added some different “slants” to the dialogs and situations.  Short chapters, easy reading, great story line! AND this is the first time I “picked out the murderer half way through the book!!!!!!! I figured out the system! Ha!

You can still feel the whole experience of being where the action/book takes place, it is just a lot warmer than the previous series is…..and I’m making a play on words here; there is a place for “erotic massage” (tastefully done…………..the writing I mean.)

Amazoncrossing, Seattle published the book…………….. Let me know what you think!

LIKE IT OR NOT!?

Addendum to The Defining Line Btw Helping and Enabling

Very quickly after I posted the above topic and helping / enabling, a very good friend of mine used the message below by an anonymous person. Some people know that they are enabling and not helping but can’t seem to walk away and let the situations work  themselves out to “what the Universal Choices lead them to make”. C B LOW

LETTING GO
To Let Go is not to stop caring,
It’s recognizing I can’t do it for someone else.
To Let Go is not to cut myself off,
It’s realizing I can’t control another.

To Let Go is not to enable,
But to allow learning from natural consequences.
To Let Go is not to fight powerlessness,
But to accept that the outcome
is not always in my hands.

To Let Go is not to try to change or blame others,
It’s to make the most of myself.
To Let Go is not to care for, it’s to care about.
To Let Go is not to fix, it’s to be supportive.

To Let Go is not to judge,
It’s to allow another to be a human being.
To Let Go is not to try to arrange outcomes,
But to allow others to affect their own destinies.

To Let Go is not to be protective,
It’s to permit another to face their own reality.
To Let Go is not to regulate anyone,
But to strive to become what I dream I can be.

To Let Go is not to fear less, it’s to love more
~Anonymous

If we all could only love more and hate less!!!!!!!!!!!

The Defining Line BTW Helping and Enabling

I keep coming back to this topic!!!!!!!!!!!! And I finally have come to this important defining line (for me at least). Previous blog entries can be found in the archives (right of the blog sheet by month and year).

Background: Almost everybody wants to help a fellow human being when they need help whether it is concerning money, addiction, health issues or just general life situations. A LOT OF TIMES we wind up frustrated and disappointed that 1. We are unable to help them (for whatever reason). 2. We think we know what help they need and alas it isn’t what the person believes is the correct plan for them. SO WHEN DO WE KNOW TO GIVE UP AND LEAVE THE SITUATION?

I know that in some cases I’ve invested months and even years in trying to “help” somebody with problems that they have. They would make “appointments” and come by and talk for hours asking my opinions and suggestions for lines of action. And then on the next visit we would go through the approximately the same issues and suggestions and opinions and NOTHING would CHANGE!!!!!! NOT ONLY WHAT I SUGGESTED HADN’T TAKEN PLACE OR EVEN BEEN TRIED AND NO NEW IDEAS HAD BEEN CREATED BY THE OTHER PERSON……….SO SAME OLD SAME OLD.  Finally I learned that all was a waste of their time and mine. THEY were coming by wanting me to confirm that what they were doing was exactly what they were supposed to be doing.

So I stopped the visits and wished them the best and hoped that they would find exactly what they wanted…..sincerely said and meant!

BUT THE PROCESS WAS SOMETIMES YEARS IN LENGTH AND WITH NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT ALL!  IT WAS GETTING ME DOWN AND SO SOMETHING HAD TO CHANGE!!!

RECENTLY I HAD A GREAT INSIGHT AND NOW I KNOW ALMOST FROM THE BEGINNING WHEN MY HELP IS NOT GOING TO BE OF ANY GOOD:

1. NOW WHEN SOMEONE COMES TO ME TO “LET ME KNOW THEY NEED HELP” I LISTEN TO THE COMPLETE SITUATION AND MAKE SOME SUGGESTIONS AND EVEN ENLIST THE HELP OF FRIENDS that might have more expertise than I do. I let the individual go out and “get to work”…………..IF nothing happens after all of the work and suggestions have not HELPED……..

2. I Let it go!  Yep, sounds hard and maybe cruel and you might feel like a failure and a heel……………but BLESS THEM AND LET THEM GO!   AND WHY?

A.   YOU CAN NOT CHANGE PEOPLE…………….NOR SHOULD YOU.

B.   PEOPLE MUST WANT TO CHANGE AND THEIR LIVES WON’T CHANGE UNTIL THEY MAKE THEIR OWN DECISION TO CHANGE…….THEN MAYBE YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP……………BUT CERTAINLY NOT BEFORE.

C. YOU ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYBODY BUT YOURSELF. EACH person has the responsibility for themselves…………..it is THEIR life………….good, bad or indifferent! They know the lessons they need to learn in this lifetime…………and they have the opportunities AND the resources to make choices………..their choices about their lives..so let them choose and LIVE WITH THOSE CHOICES!!!

LET THEM LIVE THEIR LIVES! AND YOU GO AHEAD AND LIVE YOURS!
