B00K REVIEW, SCANDINAVIAN AUTHOR JUSSI ADLER-OLSEN/DENMARK MYSTERY

THE HANGING GIRL,  by Jussi Adler-Olsen:

500 pages of pure pleasure!  The stage is set………a dead girl hanging upside down in a tree!

It starts out slowly with 2 separate stories that travel side by side and eventually bind together with a highly satisfying ending!

Adler-Olsen has written 6 books now about Department Q ( They handle cold cases that nobody wants or believes are worth the trouble.)  It all started with THE KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES. If you haven’t read any of the books…..get the first one and keep on reading………..they just get better. The characters are developed starting with the first book so starting there gives you a lot of background on them that really does add to the stories.

A very interesting part of this book is the possible origin of religion in various parts of the world……why different cultures believe basically the same things but with different characters! REALLY worth your time to read about that!

Timing in life is critical. A few minutes late for an appointment or a missed flight or sun light or dark can alter people’s lives in frightening ways. How we perceive an event can change the outcome of lives all over the world. Our lives can depend on the assumption of somebody we don’t even know! So watch out………….it could be YOU next!

As soon as Adler-Olsen delivers a new Department Q book…………I’ll have my order in right away. Order it in hard cover with the book jacket!!!! Get that feel of a real book in your hand! Drink in the smell of the ink and paper……..look and see how many pages are in it………how many chapters?…..just sit there and hold it!

I love my Kindle but I’ll never stop wanting a hard copy book in my lap on a cold wintry day to keep my content and happy!

What about you?!!!!

Book Review: The Girl in the Spider’s Web/A Lisbeth Salanda Novel

WOW! Go buy the book and enjoy it! One of the best books I’ve read in years!” It is a continuation of the Millennium Trilogy Series by Stieg Larsson  The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Even if you haven’t read the Millennium Trilogy you’ll enjoy this book! I was unsure that anybody could pick up where the trilogy left off after the death of Stieg Larsson but DAVID LAGERCRANTZ has done a superb job! It’s as good OR BETTER!

I hope that the Swedes will make a movie of this book. They did a better job than the Americans did with the Trilogy!!!!!!

THE SWEDE / THE GIRL IN THE SPIDER’S WEB / NEW SCANDINAVIAN AUTHORS!!!!

TWO “NEW” SCANDINAVIAN  AUTHORS!

THE SWEDE,  by Robert Karjel   The first book in English by Swedish author Kajel. Published in 2015 it is hot off the press!

I almost didn’t read it! But so glad I did! Up to page 55 I struggled to follow the storyline and put the bo0k down for a while. Usually you can tell by page 100 if you want to read the whole book or not. The pace picks up and continues for over 300 pages with mystery, murder, theft, betrayals, twists!

The author is a member of the Swedish Air Force and uses his knowledge of the military and world travels to tie many different cultures into an intriguing  tale of suspense!

See picture of book below………..Windows 10 (adding media items is a challenge!)

The Girl in the Spider‘s Web: A Lisbeth Salander novel, continuing Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series by David Lagercrantz

Stieg Larsson died before the Millennium series was published!!!!!!!!! 3 fantastic books followed by movies created a huge audience for Lisbeth Salander fans!

Stieg’s father and brother inherited the rights to the Millennium Series and have decided to let a “Ghost Writer” so to speak bring Lisbeth back to life and continue her adventures. This process isn’t something new………..many great writers have died and then another author comes along and continues the story lines.

I’m taking a chance and ordered the book! If it is half as good as Stieg’s writing it’ll be good!  Book comes out soon so stay tuned. I’ll keep you posted!2015-09-05 201595 001

Many more great authors have new books coming out soon such as John Grisham and Louise Penny!

BUY NOW!!!! BUY NOW!!!!! BUY now!!!!!!!!!

BUY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The stock market has hit huge lows! People are drawing their money out of the market!

The world is coming to an end! PANIC!!!!!!

RELAX!!!!!! Take that money that you’ve been saving and buy stocks NOW!

NO I’m not crazy! Just smart! And so can you be! Pay attention!!!!

This market is just another opportunity for the rich of the world to JUST GET RICHER AT YOUR EXPENSE!!!!!

THIS IS THE REASON POOR PEOPLE NEVER GET AHEAD! THEY NEVER HAVE AN MONEY TO BUY ANYTHING WHEN THE PRICES ARE LOW. THEY JUST BARELY CAN GET BY.

Rich people save their money and when the markets go way down, they buy all they can with their available cash. When the markets recover AND THEY WILL!!!! THEY SELL OFF AT THE HIGH PRICES AND SAVE THE MONEY IN CASH ACCOUNTS UNTIL THE NEXT TIME! AND SO ON AND SO ON!

The principles of money and how to live well should be taught starting in Pre K! Children need to be schooled in how to handle money at an early age. Grandparents this is a good time for you to teach your grandkids!

So no! I’m not in panic mode!!!!!!!!!!! I know how to play the game………….get on board! ANYBODY can do it! Save and invest! Watch the markets, Buy low and sell high!

YES! IT IS JUST THAT SIMPLE!

“If you say you can or can’t you are RIGHT!”

Update on Summer TV

It may be just me but Cable TV is loosing its appeal! Many of the shows are 2nd or 3rd season carry overs and once you learn the characters and situations you’re left with deciding if you really want to spend your time with the TV or not! Great books are calling us to read them!

BUT while we are waiting for The Blacklist and Downtown Abbey and a few others here are some updates on shows that I’ve visited this summer:

*  *  *  *  *     1* low…………..5* really worth your time

1. Wayward Pines…………very good! It started off slow and confusing and I almost gave up on it but went back in on episode 5 and by then it had gotten a lot more interesting. Season 1 has ended but I plan on watching season 2 because in a post apocalyptic world the story is an interesting possibility! ****

2. PROOF……………most excellent!  This is a program about finding out what happens to us after we die! The writing and acting are superb and the story lines each week are intriguing! Whether or not we will ever know what happens to us after we die, the prospects make for entertaining TV watching! *****

3. The SF Channel………..Dominion, Defiance, Dark Matter, Killjoys,  ***All  4 shows are o.k. if you like that kind of storyline. Sometimes I do, and sometimes I don’t! It is worth a look to find out though.  Olympus…………no stars at all! Silly, poorly filmed and horrible acting! Costumes are horrendous and the sets are so laughable, just don’t go there!

4. Falling Skies……..ends this season…………4 long drawn out worn out themes! If I here the word “skitters” one more time, you know what I mean. IT should have been a one season wonder! *

5. The Last Ship… very interesting storyline…………100 % realistic? No, but it is fun! Could it really happen? Yes, possibly……………at least the storylines are interesting enough to keep you coming back week after week. ***

6. A Place To Call Home……….PBS……..from Australia and a really good show it is! Take a trip to Australia and the morals and attitudes of the 1930’s. Family situations, matriarchs, strong women, weak men, mean men and women, one or two saints will bring you back  for season 2 which starts next winter (DVD of season 2 is out now……….I’m getting it and not waiting!) *****

The Crimson Field……PBS……………a look at the horrors of war……………what wars do to people…………..hard to watch but very well done! Too much for me but if you like blood and pain and heartache………dive right into it! **

7. I’m waiting for True Detectives Season 2 and Penny Dreadful Season 2 and Blacklist…………….and STAR WARS!!!!!!! And The Hunger Games Catching Fire part 2 (or whatever they are calling it)……..Jurassic Park, the new one!

That’s my story………..and I’m stick’n to it!

What’s yours”

Gardening in the South Summertime Heat 2015

WOW! It takes fortitude to garden in this heat! 8-10 days over 98 degrees daytime and lower 70’s at night! Heat pumps really strain under these conditions as do our bodies trying to adapt to the heat and humidity!

2015-06-04 692015 002

BUT, you can do it! For every hour of work outside take 15 minutes to sit in the shade or in an alcove with a fan! AND drink lots of water!

What plants survive this heat and humidity?

1. Crape-myrtle.. they bloom from July into August and with new varieties available the bloom cycle and bloom color and shapes are endless! Once established they are also drought resistant. The long ago problem with “mildew” on the leaves is rarely a problem in our yard here in GA.

2. All types of begonias! Endless colors and types. They actually thrive  in the heat and full sun! You’ll need to water them regularly though if you want them to look great! About mid-season (July here in the South) selectively cut back some stems and let them grow back out for fall. Each month cut back a few on up til late August and you’ll have blooms right on until frost (mid-November/December). Some years we have 10 months of no frost!

3. All kinds of daisies! The many varieties bloom at different times during the summer/fall. Ask your nursery rep. what  plants bloom early and late and extend your bloom time! Mostly whites or cream or yellow colors are just right for the mid section of your flower beds!

4. Perennial hibiscus  (Big Red Picture below) They are great for these southern gardens! Huge blooms with many reds, whites, pinks and mixtures make for big splashes of color for 6-8 weeks during the really hot season.

5. Crinums! Bulbs ( Bi-color bloom at top of blog) that have more blooms per stem than Amaryllis bulbs do and they bloom long after the Amaryllis are all bloomed out! White, pink, red, striped they grow quickly and reproduce to provide mounds of beautiful blooms (some even have fragrance) for months (June-August).

6. Sedum….many types are available with many colors and growth habits. Just start out with them and you’ll be hooked into becoming a great fan of these hot dry day survivors!

7. AND of course the Queen of the garden, the rose! Before the “Knock-OUT” rose hit the market many people never considered growing these amazing plants. BUT now anybody can grow roses (if you get Knock-OUT roses). They will grow for you if you fertilize them monthly and keep enough water on them to prevent wilting; particularly during the hottest months of summer! We’ve had success with shrub and drift roses too. Tea Roses are a challenge but not impossible…………just know what you are doing!

Temperature and water really make a difference in your success with plants.

2014-11-28 7112015 046

On a recent trip to Canada (June this year) the daytime temperature was 75 degrees dropping to 72 degrees at night………..plentiful rain kept the gardens up there in great shape!

There are many more plants available and I’ll mention them later this summer. Meantime, get out there and get to work………………breathe the air, feel the sun, ease the mind!

Gardening in the South…….2015

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA2015-05-29 692015 002

Crinum

Crinum

2015-06-04 692015 002From early spring Tulips to early summer Crinums!

Crinums are “kin” to the Amaryllis bulb family. Amaryllis  bloom in April/May and then Crinums bloom from May on into September.

Amaryllis have 4 blooms per stem………….Crinums may have up to 19! Both bulbs are highly recommended for Southern gardens! The bulbs that are for sale at Christmas time are “Winter Amaryllis” bulbs that can be forced to bloom  and after the holidays save them until after frost and plant them in the yard (in the south)…………and they’ll bloom and multiply for years………….

Attaching pictures of our Tulip and Crinum2014-08-29 442015 004 examples! Actually there are no pictures of Amaryllis plants in this blog post. I’m learning how to add pics to my blog and “I got some learning to do!” So “give me some slack now and I’ll get better!”

THE DEVIL WEARS MANY HATS!

As promised I’m re-blogging this post as additional information about the “devil”! And your “dark sides”……………..yes, you do have them!

Life's Lessons- Last Times's avatarLAWSON's Life's Lessons

YEP, THE DEVIL WEARS MANY HATS AND PLAYS MANY GAMES AND ONE OF HIS FAVORITE ONES IS CALLED, BAIT AND SWITCH!

THE DEVIL ISN’T ALONE IN USING IT! ALMOST 100 % OF PEOPLE USE THIS METHOD TO GET WHAT THEY WANT.  LAWYERS, CAR SALESPERSONS, REALTERS, TEACHERS……..YES, JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY!

SO HOW DOES THIS ACTUALLY WORK?

SOMEBODY WANTS SOMETHING DONE AND THEY WANT SOMEBODY ELSE TO PAY FOR IT OR DO IT FOR THEM.

FIRST THEY ASK FOR HELP/USUALLY MONEY! AND THEY “ESTIMATE” HOW MUCH THE TOTAL PROJECT WILL COST AND HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO GET IT ALL DONE.

THE TRICK AND MAIN POINT HERE IS TO UNDER ESTIMATE EVERYTHING FROM THE START……….THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT WORK.

SECOND, AS THE FIRST DEADLINE APPROACHES DELAYS START BUILDING UP…………EXCUSES TOTALLY REMOVED FROM THE PROJECT TAKE PLACE AND IN ORDER TO MAKE THE DEADLINE IT WILL TAKE MORE MONEY AND TIME…

Arnaldur Indridason (Icelandic Crime Mystery Author) REYHJAVIH NIGHTS/A Book Review

If you like murder mysteries, you will really enjoy a series by the Icelandic author, Arnaldur Indridason!!!! It all started with JAR CITY!!!!!!

His latest book, REYHJAVIH NIGHTS is a prequel to the series that started with JAR CITY and ended with STRANGE SHORES.  It gives the background for the main character in the books. After 10 books, out comes the prequel…….WHY? Usually I just say, “Follow the money”……….BUT it couldn’t be that! Indridason’s books have been so successful I find it hard to believe that he wrote the prequel just to make more money! Can you read all of the 10 books and enjoy them without having read the prequel? YES!!!!! So why should you get a copy and read it!???? If you are like me………………I like to have the “whole story”…….and the background behind the main character explaining why he is the way he is just completes the story.

SUGGESTION!!!!  Pick a friend that loves good crime mysteries! Get the prequel and the first book, JAR CITY and then promise to give him/her the next book in the series when they finish those two and so on until the series is finished. (it may be now…..but who knows?) I certainly would enjoy another book or two about these characters!

Walking with The Devil (The Killing…..”Who Killed Rosie Larsen?”) A Series Review

One of my previous blogs was titled “The Devil Wears Many Hats”….I plan to repost it after I post this addition to the topic  of “why evil is so tempting and successful under the wings of the Devil!”

I also made a statement of how great season 1 of “The Killing” was so far and that I planned on seeing seasons 2-4…………ah! But that was BEFORE I had completed season 1!!!

I really became disenchanted when I got to the end of season 1 and the murder not only was not solved, I had had no indication that it wouldn’t be. So I looked up the details on the website and found out that “somewhere in season 2 the murder would be solved”………………..well it was! And in the very last episode of season 2!!!!! I also found out that a lot of other people were upset about the way the whole thing was played out!

I ordered season 2……………….it came in and when I started it I noticed that the soundtrack was not in sync with the dialog on the screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And THEN I found out that the murder would be solved but only in the last episode!!!! I’m going to try to get another copy of season 2 and return this bad copy. I also found out the company only prints a copy when they get a request to purchase season 2……..don’t know about season 3-4………..but I won’t be watching those anyway.

So the reason is not that I can’t get a good copy of the other episodes….that might be possible but I’ve decided I don’t want to watch any more   “DARKNESS”!!!!

I equate The Killing with “walking down the road hand in hand with the devil! The acting is fantastic, the story line is so compelling that I  “binge watched” the entire season 2!, you really care about the characters and you are so determined to learn who murdered Rosie that you lose all sense of good common sense! Yeah……….like binge watching!

Did I feel better when I found out who killed an 18 year old school girl? NO!!!! I just felt used! Dirty! I had spent all of that time and money watching a TV series that left me with nightmares! I hated the way the producers had fooled us by making the murder last through 2 seasons!!!!!!!!!!!! Sure they knew we would all want to know badly enough to buy season 2……….but fool me once shame on me!!!!! Fool me twice….now that’s not nice.

Reminder…………if you walk with the Devil…………you will be burned! If you walk with the Devil…….you will wake up in the dark alone…..If you walk with the Devil…………..you aren’t walking in the Light……….and that just isn’t right!

Take my advice……………..no matter how good the Devil looks……………..or  whatever he promises………he doesn’t have your best interests to heart!

LEAVE “THE KILLING” ALONE!
